Contemporary Artists from St. Petersburg
Imago Mundi - Luciano Benetton Collection
Texts by Luciano Benetton, Liliana Malta, Gleb Ershov
Imago Mundi’s new collection is dedicated to St. Petersburg, the artistic and cultural capital of Russia. The historic centre of Saint Petersburg, with its mighty artistic heritage, is among the UNESCO protected sites. While its heritage of art and memory is immense, the contemporary city that looks to the future - also in artistic terms - cannot be ignored. The Imago Mundi collection dedicated to the artists of Saint Petersburg - 203 works in the customary 10x12 cm format - captures all the dynamism and innovation that pervade this city, informed by the legacy of the twentieth century. “Therefore the genius loci inevitably become relevant and the artists, attracted by an invisible force, become part - writes the critic Gleb Ershov in his introduction - of an unending tradition”.
Beyond the Black Square: Contemporary Artists from St. Petersburg is an Imago Mundi collection, a cultural, democratic, global, non-profit project, promoted by Luciano Benetton with the aim of creating the widest possible mapping of the different contemporary artistic experiences of our world. In Imago Mundi, each country is represented by the works of established artists and new talents, commissioned with the maximum freedom of expression, whose only constraint is the 10x12 cm format.
